How to Homeschool When You Have a Migraine

If you deal with migraines you know how it is. You go to bed with the pain starting and you know you’re in for a rough night. Or you wake up with pain that makes your stomach roll. And your kids will be getting up or are already up and ready for you to be fully present.

But how can you be present and ready to homeschool when the world is tilting, pain is taking over your body, and you just want to lay down and not move [and that might be your only option if the migraine or other type of chronic illness flare up is bad enough].

When you are homeschooling you know the struggle is real and if migraines, headaches and other health conditions are a common occurrence then read on because I’m going to share my 5 best tips with you on how to still have a good homeschool day.

Top 5 Tips to have good homeschool day even when you aren’t feeling great.

1. Plan ahead a little bit.

I’m not a big planner in all honesty but it is good to have a general idea of how your day or week is going to look and have a few things ready to go such as schoolwork assignments, meal plans, and any be aware of any outside obligations.

2. Breakfast Plans

Plan on starting the day with a simple breakfast for when the kids get up such as peanut butter toast, instant oatmeal packet, or yogurt with fruit or granola. Don’t feel bad that it’s a simple breakfast. Some of these simple choices are nourishing and filling so everyone can start the day off well.

3. Documentaries

Find a few documentaries of a history era, science interest or other interesting subjects that you are studying in your homeschool and save them to a playlist for days such as these.

4. Audiobooks

Have one or two audiobooks saved and ready to take your place in reading aloud for the day. It’s hard to do anything during a headache or migraine or other kind of chronic illness flare up. Audiobooks can be a lifesaver.

5. Fresh Air

If you are able, take your kids (or send them) outside. They have so much energy to burn and you really don’t want them burning through it in the house while you’re dealing with a flare up. Fresh air doesn’t cure a headache or any other type of flair up, but it can be very refreshing.

Bonus tip: Rest

This isn’t so much of a tip as a reminder. Chronic health problems can be exhausting, especially when they rear their ugly head. Make sure you rest as much as possible during the day. You’ll have more patience and hopefully won’t feel completely burned out at the end of the day.

I hope these tips help. They are simple but effective. Keeping our homeschool simple has been the best way to have a more relaxed, happy homeschool day.
